Nicola L.
I Am The Last Woman Object
Nicola L. (1932–2018) spent a lifetime exploring soft forms of resistance. From the mid-1960s onward, the French artist developed an equally radical and playful body of work imbued with the ideals of equality and collectivity, a delirious optimism, subversive wit, and an activist spirit. The retrospective Nicola L. – I Am The Last Woman Object, produced by Museion in collaboration with Camden Art Centre in London, Frac Bretagne in Rennes, and Kunsthalle Wien in Vienna, is an unprecedented opportunity to experience the full range of the artist’s transdisciplinary practice which moves between sculpture, performance, painting, drawing, collage, and film.
While Nicola L. engaged with certain artistic and activist movements and her work was often perceived in the context of Pop Art, Nouveau Réalisme, feminism, and design, her multifaceted oeuvre defies classification. She was constantly in movement and in exchange with others, both mentally and physically.
